Taos, NM

Fechin Inn
227 Paseo del Pueblo Norte
Taos, NM

General Information
CIPRES is a large research collaboration that involving many people and institutions. The goal is to create the tools for large scale phylogenetic reconstruction. CIPRES wishes to support the education of the next generation of phylogeny researchers, and is supporting our research meeting. The meeting will be on July 17-20 in Taos, NM. The CIPRES grant will purchase airplane tickets and reimburse students' travel for this research retreat. To attend, all you need is some time and a strong interest in phylogeny. We need several things from all students wishing to attend:
  1. confirmation of attendance (due Tuesday June 21),
  2. book a flight to Albuquerque through April (due Thurs June 30),
  3. reserve a shuttle through Twin Hearts Express (see below), and
  4. tell us how you will participate: bringing posters and\or moderating focus groups

Meeting Location: Fechin Inn, 227 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, Taos, NM.

Dates: July 17-20. We will have two full meeting days (the 18th and 19th) with the 17th and 20th being primarily for travel.

People: About 30 students with roughly a third being biologists.

Travel
Taos is a small town located 2 hours drive from the Albuquerque airport (airport code: ABQ). Each of you will be reserving your own seat on a shuttle from the airport to Taos. Make sure you have time to get your luggage and find your shuttle before it departs. You must choose a flight and tell April (april AT cs DOT unm DOT edu) the exact flight information. April will book the flight.

You each must reserve a seat on the Twin Hearts Express shuttle from the Albuquerque airport to Taos. Please do this soon, because these shuttles fill up during the summer. The sooner you make your shuttle reservation, the better.

The trips last approximately 3 hours each way. The cost is $45 one way, $80 round trip. Students have to pay for their Taos transport, retain the receipt, and get reimbursed after the conference.

Twin Hearts Express
1-800-654-9456

They leave ABQ airport to Taos at: 11:30am 1:30pm 3:30pm 5:30pm
The return trips from Taos to ABQ airport are: 7am 9am 11am 1:30pm

Once again, the summer months are extremely popular in Taos. Please call Twin Hearts Express to make your shuttle reservations as soon as possible. Also, please remember to provide time to get your luggage before your shuttle leaves the airport.

Agenda
We all agree that preparation will be important for the success of our meeting. We welcome input and ideas, and we will be contacting participants to ask people to lead discussions. Please contact Boulos and Serita (boulos AT cis DOT upenn DOT edu, serita AT cs DOT utexas DOT edu) if you want to moderate a focus group or if you want to bring a poster.

These are the focus groups that we are considering having:

  1. Networks
  2. Multiple Sequence Alignment
  3. Phylogenetic reconstruction
  4. Databases
  5. Modeling and Simulation
  6. Applications of Phylogeny
  7. Other (please let us know)

Each focus group will be moderated by a student who will facilitate discussion. The groups will begin with several short (10 minute) informal presentations, and then will proceed with an indepth discussion of research ideas.

Students can bring a poster if they wish. Please notify Boulos and Serita (boulos AT cis DOT upenn DOT edu, serita AT cs DOT utexas DOT edu) if you will be bringing a poster.
