PROJECT_STATUS04_TITLE=Investigation of the Use of the Mouse and Associated Visual Conditions for Manipulation in 3D Virtual Environments
PROJECT_STATUS05_DESCR=I will be concentrating on the use of the mouse as an input
device. The initial proposal put forth the investigation of
the joystick and Polhemus as input devices as well as that
of the mouse. The project will explore the feasibility of
the use of the mouse for use in 3D virtual environments and
the adaptability of the human to less immediately
intuitive manipulation methods. The effect of stereoscopic
presentation of the environment will be an additional
element which will be explored.
PROJECT_STATUS06_WDONE=The experimental setup has been completed. The mouse is
used as input device to control a virtual simulation of a
robot by joint angle control. Each button setting selects
2 joint angles to be controlled by the placement of the
cursor on the screen (left-right and up-down each control
a joint angle). The experimental protocol has been
formulated. The task is a simple target-reach. A log is
kept of all states of the mouse and the simulation robot.
Measurements include joint angles, end-effector position,
2D mouse cursor position, mouse switch setting among others.
Experimental trials have been completed with a few subjects
and some analysis of the data has been carried out.

PROJECT_STATUS10_DEADL=The experimental set-up as mentioned above will be
completed. Experimental trials with at least 4 subjects
will have been completed. This will enable analysis of the
data and extraction of some significant results. The
project hopes to show that even though initially the
use of the mouse in not as intuitive as other input
devices, learning takes place very quickly such that
performance ease becomes comparable. An expected result
is that the mouse, although low in immersion effect is
still quite adequate in commanding movement in 3D virtual
space.
