  • Text

Linear Algebra, 4th edition, by Stephen Friedberg, Arnold Insel, and Lawrence Spence is available in local bookstores.
  • A list of errata is available, including homework questions.
  • There are many good books on linear algebra. You can use the math department course archives to see which texts have been used in previous years. Reading several presentations of one topic is often helpful.
  • One book used in the past is Linear Algebra Done Right by Sheldon Axler. It is based in part on ideas from his article Down with Determinants!, which you might enjoy reading.
  • You may also want to look at the webset for my graduate numerical linear algebra course Math 221, to see practical algorithms for solving linear equations, finding eigenvalues, etc. My course on parallel computing CS 267, discusses how these algorithms are implemented on parallel computers.
  • Course outline in pdf or postscript. (last updated Aug 29, 10:20am)

  • This includes topics to be covered and grading policies. You are responsible for reading this and knowing the course rules about late or missing assignments, etc.
  • Teaching Assistants and Sections

  • TA office hours during finals week are posted
  • Enrollment Issues

  • Barbara Peavy (967 Evans Hall, 642-2479, peavy@math) is in charge of all enrollment issues, so please direct all queries to her, including how to get off the waitlist. We do not anticipate any enrollment problems based on space.
  • Homework Assignments

  • Homework 7: Questions 6, 7, 8 and 9 postponed until next week!
  • Homework 7: was posted Oct 15 at 8:15am, and then modified at 8:40am.
  • Homework 1: questions from section 1.5 are postponed until Homework 2!
  • Lecture notes

  • See here for times of most recent updates to lecture notes.
  • On-line resources

  • List of Top 500 Supercomputers in the world, measured by how fast they solve Ax=b using Gaussian elimination.
  • National Academy report on the future of supercomputing, including the role of linear algebra.
  • UC Berkeley course on Parallel Computing, including how to implement various linear algebra algorithms in parallel.
