Get the local IP address of the machine in a portable manner

Finding the local IP address of your machine is a primitive you often need. The way to do this differs from OS to OS. On this page you will find a function to find the local IP address of a machine that works on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. The getLocalAddress() is basically a wrapper with ifdefs for different operating systems. Make sure that correct ifdefs are enabled when you use the code.
