Ony my way to K2, under shadows of Masherbrum (7821m),
Pakistan.
I
am Kashif Ali, post-doctoral
research fellow with Prof. Eric Brewer
and the TIER research group,
focusing on ICT4D.
Currently,
I am working with Kurtis Heimerl on
low cost, low power GSM base station (VBTS:
Village Base Station). The VBTS is engineered for low-density regions of
the world with poor or no cellular coverage. We are enhancing GSM to reduce the
BTS power consumption. Our GSM base-station runs modified version of openBTS.
Recently,
I found myself interested in engineering low cost and low power computing
machines for middle (and low-middle) income classes of the world.
My
thesis work was on RFID, mainly architectural and algorithmic enhancements to
support ultra-large scale deployments (in context of Internet of Things).
