Inventing The Future: User Interface Design, Prototyping, and Evaluation
James Landay and Scott Klemmer

Good user interfaces are essential for any successful product, whether it is a web site, a cell phone, a personal digital assistant, or shrink-wrapped software. This course will teach you the proven principles and processes for designing good user experiences and how to apply them to your next software/web design project. more >>

    Research

My primary research interests are in human-computer interaction, user interface design tools, pen-based user interfaces, end-user programming, mobile computing, and other novel uses of computer technology. The Group for User Interface Research is working in many of these areas. I'm also a co-founder of the new Berkeley Institute of Design (BID), a multi-disciplinary research institute focussed on designing the interaction of the future, which require combined knowledge in architecture, industrial design, and user interface design.

    Students

I advise students (both graduate and undergraduate) who are interested in any of the above areas or other areas of mutual interest. I am currently working with this fine group of students. If you are interested in becoming a graduate student or postdoc at Berkeley, but are not yet admitted/enrolled, please read this note.
