Tiny = Sensors=20 Detect Intruders

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio =96 Intruders may soon have to = watch where=20 they step. Technology developed by an Ohio State engineer-scientist will = enable=20 tiny dust-sized sensors scattered on the ground to detect and classify = an=20 intruder=92s movements.

 

Anish Arora, = professor=20 of computer and information science, and his research group are developing the software that enables distributed = sensors,=20 sometimes called =93smart dust=94, to self-organize into a network = capable of=20 detecting, tracking and classifying intruders into groups such as = civilians,=20 soldiers, or vehicles. The network also has a self-healing capability = that=20 enables it to compensate for a destroyed or malfunctioning sensor = without human=20 intervention.

 

A=20 public demonstration of this technology is planned for Monday, September = 8 at=20 11:30am in the north = lawns of=20 Chemical Abstract Services (2540 Olentangy = River=20 Road).

 

=93Smart = dust=94 is the=20 popular name for a wireless sensor network technology developed by DARPA = that=20 could transform not only the way we fight but possibly even the way we = live.=20 Increasingly, this technology is being applied to industrial and = consumer=20 products in addition to its military applications.
