• Some computer graphics course; CS 184 or equivalent recommended,
• Familarity with some CAD tool to build 3D shapes; or willingness to learn to use one.

2. Latest Course Description

Students will learn about these rapid-prototyping technologies in contrast to other manufacturing methods, and how to select the proper method for a particular part. They will also learn about the interchange formats used to describe such parts to the manufacturers and about CAD tools for the design of such parts.

All students design, submit, and evaluate one or more parts -- starting with something as simple as a moebius band, and ending up with more complicated models of mechanical parts, mathematical surfaces, or of artistic designs.

GRADING:

• There will be no midterm and no final exam.
• A grade will be assigned based on the amount of class participation, the effort put into the homework assignments, competence and quality of the 3-4 design / prototyping assignments, and the quality of the final project and the presentation and reports about it.
