"Whirled White Web" -- The Design

The design emerges from a many-year collaboration between Brent Collins and Carlo Séquin.
It belongs to a large family of "Scherk-Collins Toroids" which were originally conceived by Collins,
and subsequently generalized and captured in Séquin's "Sculpture Generator I",
a computer program that can quickly show what a new combination of topological and geometrical
parameters might look like.  After extensive consultation by e-mail with Stan Wagon,
the following shape has been chosen as the basis for the 2003 Snow Sculpting Championship:

Using rapid prototyping machines, maquettes were subsequently fabricated to study the design in more detail
and to plan the approach by which this complex shape can best be executed in snow and ice.
