Prerequisites

The prerequisites for this course are CS 61A, CS 61B, and Math 55.

Announcements

Announcements will be made here and on the CS170 newsgroup.

(5/27) Some students have asked why their lowest two homework grades weren't dropped. The answer is that they were dropped, just ignore the glookup total, it's not what we used.

(5/27) Your grades in CS170 are now available with glookup; they are printed next to your final exam score.

(5/25) We've graded the final. You can consult the histogram of scores to see how the class did in general. The mean was 81 out of 180 and the median was 76. Many of you were wondering why your grades changed from Saurday to Monday: the answer is that we ended up regrading some portions of the final.

(5/14) The review session for the final is this Sunday, 5/16, from 12:30-2:30 in room 306 Soda.

(5/7) For a postscript version of the histogram for everyone's grades except for hws 11,12, prog2 and the final click here.

(4/16) For a postscript version of the histogram for the second midterm, click here.

(4/10) Time change for midterm! The midterm is now from 5-7 in 1 Pimentel. We were unable to get a room after 7.

(4/1) The test files for the programming assignment are here.

(3/26) Midterm 2 has been moved to Tuesday, April 13 from 5:30-7:30 pm. Room TBA.

(3/8) Starting Tuesday, March 16, there will be a new Review Section, meeting Tuesdays, 5-6 pm, in 320 Soda. This section will deal with topics not covered in detail in lectures but needed as background, and anything else that people might be having problems with. This is a supplementary section and NOT a substitute for the regular Wednesday sections. Please let me (Sergey) know if you plan to attend so I have a rough count. Also, please let me know what topics would be best for discussing on March 16.

(3/8) Due to low attendance, we are cancelling the Tuesday section. If you were in that section, sorry for the inconvenience, and please attend one of the Wednesday sections instead.

(3/4) There will be no section on Tuesday, March 9. If you are in that section, would you please attend Sergey's or anyone else's section on Wednesday instead (THIS WEEK ONLY).

(3/1) For a postscript version of the histogram for the first midterm, click here.

(2/26) The due date for the first programming assignment is now Friday, March 5..

(2/19) The first midterm will be held Thursday, Feb 25.

(2/18) Your grade records should now be accessible. For instructions on how to check your grades go to the usual place.

(2/16) Sanjoy's new office hours: Tu 5-7.

(2/12) Instructions for electronic submission of programming assignments can be found here.

(2/7) NEW tentative date for Midterm II: April 6.

(2/4) Sergey's new office hours: M 4-5, W 2:30-3:30 (in 515 Soda or a 5th floor lounge).

(2/2) IMPORTANT!!! Every student in the class needs to register electronically. Click here for instructions!

(2/2) The permanent classroom for the new W 11-12 discussion is 405 DAVIS. Also another new section has been added. It meets Tu 3-4 320 Soda.

(1/26) Note that a new discussion section has been added. It will meet W 11-12, in 380 Soda until a permanent classroom is assigned.

(1/26) There was a typo in the problem set. In problem 2 it should say T(1) >= 1, not T(n) >= 1.

(1/19) Midterm I: February 23.

(1/19) There is an additional section that will meet W11-12 in room TBA starting next Wednesday (1/27).

(1/19) If you need an instructional account to do the programming assignments click here for information!

(1/19) Welcome to CS170!

Grades

Grading breakdown:

You are encouraged to work in groups in homework, but you must each turn in your own work. No late homework will be accepted, since answers will be available on the web the day after they are due. The lowest homework grade will be dropped. The material in this class can only be learned by doing lots of problems, so the homework is very important.
