• Home IP
1. If you want to connect your home computer to the Berkeley     network, you can use Berkeley's modem pool via HomeIP. This     way you can run all sorts of networking applications at home (such as Netscape, FTP, Telnet, etc.). The following instructions are an extremely abridged version of the real document /usr/pub/home-ip.help .  This help file is extremely useful and please do read it. There are lots of other useful help files in this path as well.
1. The first step in connecting your computer to the network is to set up a Home IP account. You need to officially belong to either the CS or EE departments - if you don't you will need to get your own internet service provider (ISP).   For a list of local ISPs, see  http://www-resources.berkeley.edu/docs/pages/isp.html .
2. Log into your cs61b shell account.
3. At the shell prompt, type the following command:

telnet home-ip.berkeley.edu
and log in as home-ip.
4. Read selection 8 - Policies and Appropriate Use.
5. Select 3 - Create an Account
6. You will be prompted for information, at the end of which a Home IP account will have been set up for you. Accounts take a day or so to be activated.

3. Once you have a home IP account, you are ready to set up networking on your computer.

• Java At Home
1. Windows 95/NT:
• Depending on the contents of the CDROM that came with your text book, you may already have the Java Development Kit located at \JavaTools\Win95\JDK\

If not, you can always download it here: jdk112.exe(8.23MB)
• Copy this executable to the path where you would like the development kit to be installed. (The install program creates a directory "java" which all the files are placed in, so it won't spew files all over your hard drive.)
• You can now delete the copy of the executable on your hard drive.
• Add the path of the java\bin directory to your autoexec.bat
• If you have any problems you may want to try reading the official installation instructions.

2. Macintosh:
• The CDROM included with the text book does not include the Macintosh version of the Java Development Kit. You will need to download it:

• Windows 95/NT:

If you plan to do alot of coding at home you may want to download the freely available Windows 95/NT port of GNU Emacs.
• You will need to download two archives:

emacs-19.34.1-bin.tar.gz (1.57MB) - The compiled binaries. emacs-19.34.1-lisp.tar.gz (7.52MB) - The LISP source.
• Use an unzipping utility such a WinZip to extract both archives to the same path.
• Open up an MS-DOS shell and cd to the directory containing emacs.
• If you extracted to the directory c:\emacs-19.34, type the following command:

c:\emacs-19.34\bin\addpm.exe c:\emacs-19.34
This sets up emacs with the system registry and places the appropriate links in the Start menu.

• Use Emacs 19.34 or newer.
• Install the file ~cs61b/lib/emacs/lisp/andersl-java-font-lock.el
  into your emacs lisp directory at home.
• Byte-compile the file using the emacs command 'byte-compile-file' for better performance.
• Add the following lines to your personal .emacs file:

  Those commands will make Emacs color everything it can, and use as
  many colors as possible. It will also turn on java mode automatically
  when you open a '.java' file.
  If coloring doesn't work after doing this stuff then you probably
  don't have all the required Emacs libraries--try downloading a new
  version of Emacs.
  

• PC Disks on the Solaris Machines

Information on how to do this is in the file /usr/pub/Solaris.drives on the Berkeley machines. Here's an abridged version:
• FORMAT

fdformat -d /vold/dev/rdiskette0
• READ/WRITE A FORMATTED FLOPPY
1. volcheck
2. cd /floppy
3. ls

floppy0 no_name

4. cd no_name
Now you have changed the directory to the floppy disk and can use all of the standard UNIX commands (cp, ls, etc).

When you're done using the flopydisk DON'T JUST EJECT IT FROM THE DRIVE!! Use the follwoing commands to be sure the disk is properly updated:

1. cd /
2. eject
Now you can take the floppy out of the drive.
 
• Transfer files with ftp

A convenient way to transfer files between your home computer and the instructional machines is to use ftp.  The following is a quick walk-through of uploading and downloading files on PC.  For more information on ftp, please refer to the UNIX man page by typing at UNIX prompt:  man ftp
• Uploading a file  (from home computer to instructional machine)
1. Open an MS-DOS prompt (Command Prompt on NT), and change directory to where the file is stored.  Type :

   ftp cory.eecs.berkeley.edu             // or any instructional machines name
2. Enter your login name and password.

Now you just logged into an instructional machine, and you should be in your UNIX home directory.
3. Change directory to where the file is to be stored by:

   cd directory_name
 If the directory does not exist, create it by:
   mkdir directory_name
    cd directory_name
4. To transfer text files, e.g.  java program files, type:

   ascii
To transfer binary files, e.g. java class files, type:
    bin
5. Type the following:

    put filename
        // substitute "filename" with your file
6. Quit ftp program by typing:

    bye
• Downloading a file (from instructional machine to home computer)
1. Open an MS-DOS prompt (Command Prompt on NT), and change directory to where the file is to be stored.  Type :

   ftp cory.eecs.berkeley.edu             // or any instructional machines name
2. Enter your login name and password.
